In our NCP FAQs, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about NCP VPN clients:
From VPN installation and configuration to software activation, license keys, software updates, and product features.
In version 14 of the client interface, open the menu using the triangle icon on the left and select “Help” → “About”. The software version currently in use will be displayed there.
For all Windows clients except version 14.10, open the menu in the client GUI and select “Help” → “About”. The software version currently in use will be displayed there.
By default, an information field is displayed in the monitor of the NCP Secure Entry Client. This field can be replaced or removed if required. Clicking on it opens an HTML file with instructions on how to add a company or project logo.
When installing the NCP Secure Enterprise Client, the file cbo.ini is also created at C:\ProgramData\NCP\SecureClient\config\cbo.ini. Among other things, this file contains instructions on how to integrate a company or project logo into the client interface.
Yes. The NCP Secure Client supports the IPsec standard, including IKEv1 and IKEv2, as well as RFC-defined protocol extensions such as XAUTH, EAP, IKEConfig, and NAT-T.
As not all VPN vendors support every IPsec protocol extension and IPsec implementations may vary, please contact the manufacturer of your IPsec gateway if you have questions about specific functionalities.
Yes. Configuration files from other vendors can be imported. Files in .pcf, .wgx, .spd, or .ini format can be imported automatically.
By default, the VPN connection is disconnected automatically and immediately when the certificate storage device is removed. If the connection should remain active, this behaviour can be configured accordingly.
You can find the latest version of the NCP Secure Client in the NCP Download Area
You can find step-by-step instructions on our Software Activation page.
NCP offers both free and paid software updates.
Important Notes
You can find a list of all major releases that are chargeable here. For more information about the license update, please refer to our Service pages.
You can easily transfer your client settings by copying the ncpphone.cfg file. This file contains all NCP Secure Client settings. You can find the file in the following locations:
Microsoft-supported Windows x64/ARM versions
From client version 13.x onwards:
C:\ProgramData\NCP\SecureClient\data
Apple-supported macOS versions
/Library/Application Support/NCP/Secure Client/
Linux Ubuntu and Fedora
/opt/ncp/clnt/etc/cfg
If certificates are used in the configuration, they may also need to be backed up. As certificates can be stored in different locations, you should check where the certificates in use are stored. Possible locations include the client's default directory, a smart card, or the operating system's certificate store.
By default, the client uses the certs and cacerts folders in C:\ProgramData\NCP\SecureClient\data to store local certificate files. These directories can also be backed up if required.
There are two ways to activate the software: online activation and offline activation. For more information, please visit our Software Activation page.
Software activation is required in the following cases:
The following issues may cause activation to fail:
Solution: Update the software.
Only hardware information, such as the CPU serial number and MAC address, is used for software activation. No user data is collected or used for this purpose. Software registration is not required.
If a licence has already been activated on a device but is no longer being used on that device, you can request an activation reset through the Reactivation Form on our website.
You can deactivate the NCP Secure Entry Client (Windows 32/64-bit) to transfer the licence to new hardware. To do so, select “Help” → “Deactivate Client…” from the menu and follow the instructions.
You can request additional activations via our Reactivation or Multiple Activation of NCP Licences page (known as “Grace Activation”).
Yes. If the device and its hardware remain unchanged, the software does not need to be activated again. This also applies if the software is reinstalled, provided the same operating system is used. However, the licence key must be entered again.
In all other cases, the rules described above apply.
Yes. A licence key can be used for two activations. One of these is the “Grace Activation” described above. You can request this through our Reactivation or Multiple Activation of NCP Licences page.
To use the client software, you need a serial number and a licence key. Client software licence keys are associated with a specific software version. The features available in the client software are determined solely by the licence key. The client licence is activated using an activation code assigned to each device via the internet.
Both clients offer a similar range of features. However, the NCP Secure Enterprise Client also supports centralized administration, making it particularly suitable for large environments with many users.
For a detailed comparison of their features, please refer to our Product Comparison Overview.
Yes. NCP Secure Clients offer secure hotspot login and an integrated dynamic Personal Firewall. They also support Friendly Net Detection (FND).
